FOREST GROVE, Ore. – Visiting Whitworth was able to win one match each in doubles and singles during a 7-2 loss to nationally-ranked Pacific (Ore.) in a Northwest Conference men's tennis match on Saturday afternoon.
The Pirates fell to 0-6 overall and 0-4 in the NWC while the Boxers (#34 in the ITA DIII poll) improved to 2-4, 2-2. Whitworth will complete its weekend trip to Oregon with a contest at Willamette University in Salem on Sunday morning.
Ian Fisher and Ben Bethards earned an 8-3 win at #3 doubles over Pacific's Josh Bernstein and Sage Katayama to give the Pirates a doubles point. Earlier Clark Winnger and Oscar Wright defeated Whitworth's Shane Sandlin and Jeffrey Vulis 8-0 at #1 doubles, while Ford Nakagawa and Reuben Mulhern topped Caleb Hughes and Jake Bethards 8-3 at #2 doubles.
Vulis won the only singles point for the Bucs when he defeated Katayama 6-4, 7-5 at #5 singles.
Wininger swept Sandlin 6-0, 6-0 at #1 singles, while Wright got by Hughes 6-2, 6-4 at #2 and Bernstein beat Fisher 6-1, 6-2 at #2.
