
SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitworth men's tennis team will head into the 2016 Northwest Conference tournament on a roll after dispatching visiting Puget Sound 9-0 on Sunday morning at the Scotford Tennis Center.
The Pirates completed the weekend sweep of the Tacoma-area schools with a second straight shutout and improved to 12-7 overall and 8-4 in the NWC. Whitworth heads into as the #4 seed and will take on top-seeded Whitman on Friday.
Sunday's match took just less than two hours and the doubles matches were done in less than 40 minutes. Whitworth's Drew Brigham and Drew Adams won 8-0 at #1 doubles over Nicholas Lupan and Riley Inn. Second and third doubles ended in identical 8-1 scores. Caleb Hughes and Shane Sandlin topped Chet Selis and Andrew Struzenberg at #2, while Blake Miller and Layne Ryerson defeated Jacob Kompolt and Yuwang Ha at #3.
The six singles matches were no closer. Brigham was done first after he beat Selis 6-0, 6-1 at #1 singles. Then Ryan Adams clinched the team victory with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Rajan Grad-Kaimal at #6 singles.
Miller beat Lupan 6-1, 6-1 at #2 and Ryerson rolled past Severt 6-1, 6-2 at #4. Jhun Gumboc topped Struzenberg 6-0, 6-3 at #5. The closest match of the day came at #3 where Ryan Adams knocked off Inn 6-3, 6-1.
Start times for this weekend's tournament will be announced later this week.
