PORTLAND, Ore. – Whitworth University was unable to overtake 39th-ranked Lewis & Clark College for third place in the Northwest Conference men's tennis standings after the Pioneers defeated the Pirates 7-2 on Sunday.
L&C improved to 8-7 overall and 5-2 in the NWC while Whitworth dropped to 9-6, 6-3.
In the first meeting of the season between the schools last month, the Pioneers won two of three doubles matches. Once again the Pirates were able to claim one of the three doubles contests when Shane Sandlin and Caleb Hughes topped Kevin Ross and Harrison Collins 8-6 at #2 doubles.
Layne Ryerson picked up the Pirates' only singles victory when he defeated Ross 7-5, 6-3 at #3.
At #1 singles Reed got a measure of revenge on Whitworth's Brigham with a 6-3, 6-3 win. Brigham had defeated Reed in the first matchup last month.
The Pirates will return to action next weekend on Saturday at NWC-leading Whitman.
