Pirate Men Split on Wednesday

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Whitworth University men's tennis team split its two matches on Wednesday during the Pirates' Spring Break trip to Orlando.  Whitworth defeated Western Connecticut State 9-0 in the morning before falling to Birmingham-Southern 6-3 in the afternoon.

The Pirates are now 7-5 overall after BSC ended Whitworth's six-match winning streak.

The Bucs rolled past the Colonials (0-3) in dominating fashion.  The closest matches came in doubles where Shane Sandlin and Caleb Hughes won 8-2 at #1 and Drew and Ryan Adams won 8-2 at #2.  It was the first time this season that the Adams brothers teamed up as a doubles pair.

Whitworth won three of the singles matches 6-0, 6-0.  Jeffrey Vulis (#3), Ian Fisher (#5) and Nick Hughes (#6) all won by shutout.

Layne Ryerson won 6-1, 6-0 at #1 singles in his first career match at the top of the ladder.  Jhun Gumboc claimed a 6-1, 6-1 victory at #2 singles, while Ryan Adams won 6-0, 6-1 at #4 singles.

The competition was much stiffer against BSC (8-2) a school that played as an NCAA Division I institution until a few years ago.

Blake Miller and Ryerson earned Whitworth's only point in doubles when they defeated Henry Crosby and David Goodloe 8-4 at #3 doubles.  Drew Brigham and Drew Adams dropped a hard-fought 8-5 decision to Patrick Hire and Alex Makarenko at #1 doubles by a single break.

Three of the singles matches went to three sets, while two other matches had a set determined by a tiebreaker.

Drew Adams held off George Chunn 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-5) at #4 singles for a Whitworth point.  Shane Sandlin outlasted Anthony Pellegrini 6-7 (4), 7-6 (5), 1-0 (10-5) in a marathon match for the final Pirate point.

Lee Thompson edged Whitworth's Caleb Hughes 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-7) at #6 singles.

The Pirates will conclude their trip to Florida on Friday morning with a match against Hope College.
