Whitworth Men Open Tennis Trip With a Win

ORLANDO, Fla. – Whitworth University opened its Spring Break trip to Florida with a 7-2 win over Hasting College (Neb.) on Monday evening at the Lake Cane Tennis Club.

The Pirates improved to 6-4 with their fifth straight win.  The Broncos dropped to 2-8.

Whitworth swept the doubles matches to grab an early 3-0 lead.  Blake Miller and Layne Ryerson had the easiest path to victory for the Bucs with an 8-3 win over Matt Case and Tanner Sandvick at #3 doubles.

The Whitworth team victory was decided quickly as Shane Sandlin earned a 6-0, 6-0 win over Case at #5 singles and Drew Brigham followed with a 6-0, 6-3 decision over Mark Guesswell at #1 singles.

Blake Miller added a 6-0, 6-1 Pirate win over Leland Dexter at #2 singles. Ryerson followed with a 6-0, 7-5 victory over Dakota Burns at #3 singles for a 7-0 Pirate lead.  Hastings claimed the only two singles contests that went more than two sets.

Whitworth continues its trip with a pair of matches on Wednesday.  The Bucs will take on Western Connecticut State and Birmingham-Southern.
