SALEM, Ore. – The Whitworth men's tennis team is returning home with a second straight victory after the visiting Pirates defeated Willamette 8-1 on Sunday.
Whitworth won twice on the three-match trip to Oregon and the Pirates improved to 3-4 overall and 3-2 in the NWC. The Bearcats fell to 1-3, 1-2.
The Bucs claimed all three doubles matches for an early 3-0 lead. The Drews – Brigham and Adams – earned an 8-4 victory over Sam Wexman and Colin Yamaguchi at #1 doubles. Caleb Hughes and Shane Sandlin improved to 6-1 as a doubles team and took their second straight at #2 on the ladder with an 8-6 win over Aaon Schechter and Derek Lund. And Blake Miller and Layne Ryerson topped Blake Brash and Douglas Hochmuth 8-3 at #3 doubles.
Whitworth then won five of the six singles matches to turn the contest into a runaway.
Brigham, Miller, Ryerson and Hughes were all double winners on Sunday. Brigham beat Schechter 6-3, 6-2 at #1, while Miller topped Wexman 6-3, 7-5 at #2.
Ryerson defeated Colin Yamaguchi 6-0, 6-0 at #4 in the most lopsided contest of the day. Hughes defeated Lund 6-3, 6-2.
Ryan Adams earned his first singles victory of the season with a 6-3, 6-0 decision over Hochmuth at #6 on the ladder.
After claiming consecutive wins over Linfield and Willamette on the road, the Pirates will return to action in two weeks when they host Linfield and Willamette on March 12-13.
