McMINNVILLE, Ore. – Whitworth University claimed its second men's tennis victory of the season with a dominating 9-0 win at Linfield on Saturday.
The Pirates improved to 2-4 overall and 2-2 in the Northwest Conference while the Wildcats dropped to 2-5, 1-2.
Whitworth jumped out to a 3-0 lead by sweeping the doubles matches. Drew Adams and Drew Brigham defeated Ben McNair and Carter Pentz 8-1 at #1 in the quickest match of the three. Blake Miller and Layne Ryerson won 8-2 at #3. Shane Sandlin and Caleb Hughes, playing at #2 for the first time this season, claimed an 8-5 win over Trent Prussing and Charlie Farrenkopf.
None of the six singles matches went past two sets. The closest contest came at #6 singles where Hughes pulled out a 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) win over Jacob Mangan.
Brigham won 6-1, 6-0 over McNair at #1 while Miller beat Prussing 6-3, 6-3 at #2. Adams rolled past Pentz 6-0, 6-1 at #3.
Ryerson earned a 6-0, 6-1 win over Ferrenkopf at #4 and Sandlin defeated Liam Spearnak 6-1, 6-2 at #5.
Whitworth will conclude its three-match trip to Oregon on Sunday at Willamette.
