NEWBERG, Ore. – Drew Brigham picked up his first singles victory of the 2015 men's tennis season, but visiting Whitworth fell 5-4 at George Fox in a Northwest Conference match on Sunday.
The Pirates dropped to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in the NWC. The Bruins improved to 2-1, 1-1.
Brigham, an All-Northwest Conference honoree last season, had a big day for the Pirates. He teamed with Shane Sandlin to pull out a 9-8 (8-6) thriller over Spencer Watanabe and Andrew You at #1 doubles. Then Brigham pulled out a hard-fought 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 win over Chris Lilly at #1 singles.
Sandlin also earned a singles victory for the Bucs, getting past Nicholas Grafton 6-4, 6-2 at #4 singles. Drew Adams earned Whitworth's fourth point with 6-1, 6-1 win over Nick Erkern at #6.
Matt Goebel, who was Whitworth's only winner on Saturday at Pacific, went to a tiebreaker before losing 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) to Vincent Viloria at #5 singles.
The Pirates are now off until March 7th when they host nationally-ranked Whitman in the first home match of the season.
