SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth concluded a challenging weekend in men's tennis with a 9-0 win over visiting Puget Sound in Northwest Conference action on Sunday afternoon at the Scotford Tennis Center.
The Pirates improved to 3-7 overall and 3-2 in the NWC despite playing their third match in as many days, only two of which were at home. The Loggers dropped to 0-4, both overall and in the NWC.
Whitworth breezed through doubles play. Cameron Williams and Drew Brigham rolled to an 8-1 win over Michael Cutter and Graham Baker at #1 doubles. Chris Englemann and Blake Miller topped Jake Peterson and Daniel Deuel 8-3 at #2 while Matt Goebel and John Talbot doubled up Michael Tieu and Abe Noyes 8-4 at #3 doubles.
The Pirates swept all six singles matches in straight sets. Williams beat Cutter 6-1, 6-1 at #1 and Brigham over Baker 6-0, 6-4 at #2 set the tone. Englemann blanked Deuel 6-0, 6-0 at #3.
The bottom three singles matches went in similar fashion. Miller beat Noyes 6-2, 6-2 at #4 while Talbot overcame Peterson 7-5, 6-1 at #5. Micah Spaun rounded out the team victory with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over John Stevens at #6.
Whitworth returns to action next Friday with a home match against NWC foe Linfield.
