WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Erik Nielsen scored in double overtime to give Whitman the 3-2 win over the visiting Whitworth men's soccer team in Saturday afternoon's Northwest Conference matchup.
The Pirates (5-7-1, 3-4 NWC) came back from a two-goal deficit in the second half, but the Blues (8-5, 5-2) picked up the win after Nielsen sent in a hard-driven shot into the upper right corner of the net.
Jadon Bachtold scored twice in the first half to give the Blues a 2-0 lead going into the break. The first came in the 18th minute off a pass from Oscar Harding. Bachtold found the net for the second time off a corner kick by Jimmy Jacobson in the 41st minute.
Whitworth cut the Blues' lead in half as Zanskar Blair placed a shot into the top right corner of the net, above the diving reach of Whitman goalkeeper Owen Davis-Bower. Scott Penner was credited with the assist.
The Pirates tied the match at 2-2 in the 61st minute after earning a penalty kick. Chase Reidt took the kick, sending a powerful shot into the left side of the net.
