SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitworth men's soccer team closes out the first half of Northwest Conference play with a challenging match at Whitman in Walla Walla.

The Blues and Bucs will square off on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 2:30 p.m.

Live statistics and video links will be available on the Whitworth men's soccer schedule.

The Pirates: Whitworth (5-6-1, 3-3 NWC) continued to battle through injuries, splitting the weekend's matches with a 4-1 win at Pacific (Ore.) and a 1-0 loss to George Fox. Three of the Pirates' four goals on Friday's match against the Boxers came from freshmen. Eric Shaporda, Christian Pumpelly and Braydon Chang all recorded their first collegiate goals in the win. Bo Broyles finished with three saves including a penalty kick save in the win.

Whitworth dominated possession in Sunday's match at George Fox, but the Bruins played great defense on their way to a shutout win. The Bucs had a 20-8 shots advantage and only allowed the Bruins two shots on goal in the physical match that saw a total of 45 fouls.

Savvy Seniors: Chase Reidt has already doubled his season scoring total from last year, recording four goals on the season so far. Reidt also has a team-leading four assists. Britton Clifford has scored in two of the Pirates' last three matches, bringing his season goal total to three with two assists.

Zanskar Blair has played a key role in keeping the offense moving, tallying two goals, two assists and starting in all 12 matches so far. Drew Williams led Whitworth in scoring last year and has recorded two goals this season.

The Blues: Whitman (7-5, 4-2 NWC) returns to Walla Walla after a strong weekend in Oregon, defeating George Fox 3-1 and then shutting out Pacific (Ore.) 2-0 to close the weekend. Jordan Furukawa leads the Blues in goals with five. Oscar Harding has recorded four assists. Whitman has recently been a tough opponent for the Pirates winning the last three matches including the season series last year. The Blues won 2-1 on the road and 3-1 at home in 2018.

Looking Ahead: The Pirates open the second half of the conference schedule as they host George Fox and Pacific (Ore.) on Oct. 19-20.

The Coach: Morgan Cathey continues a long line of highly successful men's soccer coaches at Whitworth University that began with Einar Thorarinsson (1986-1994) and continued with Sean Bushey (1996-2012), who now coaches in Minnesota.

Cathey enters his seventh season as men's soccer coach at Whitworth in the fall of 2019.  He has led the Pirates to a record of 72-30-15 through his first six seasons.  He guided the Pirates to three consecutive Northwest Conference titles from 2014-16 and made three straight appearances in the NCAA Division III Tournament.  Cathey's record against NWC opponents is 54-17-13 over his first five seasons.
