WOODBURN, Ore. – Senior Jesse Salzwedel earned medalist honors and helped the Whitworth University men's golf team tie for second place at the Northwest Conference Championship tournament at OGA Golf Course on Sunday.
Salzwedel matched his one-over-par score of 73 from the first round in the final 18 holes of the 6501 yard course on Sunday. He was named the 2014 Northwest Conference Men's Golfer of the Year, marking the fourth time in his Whitworth career that he has been named First Team All-NWC.
Entering the final day of competition tied for third, Salzwedel held a one stroke advantage over Pacific Lutheran's Seth Nickerson in the final player standings.
The other four Pirates lowered their scores in Sunday's final round. Sophomore Oliver Rudnicki lowered his score by five strokes, including an eagle on the fifth hole, and moved up seven spots, tying for eighth place with a 79-74—153 score. Rudnicki earned his second straight First Team All-NWC honors.
Sophomore Austin Billeter lowered his score by five strokes with birdies on holes five and 10 and finished 19th in the player standings with a total score of 81-76—157. Sophomore Samson Martinez used a birdie on the ninth hole to lower his score by a stroke on Sunday, tying for 29th with a total score of 82-81—163.
The Pirates turned in the second-lowest team score on Sunday to move up one spot in the final team standings. Puget Sound turned in the lowest team score of the final round, a 298 to Whitworth's 299. The Loggers and the Pirates tied for second place with total scores of 612. Pacific Lutheran claimed the team title with a 602 total team score.
