SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitworth University men's golf program has a team in fourth and fifth place after the opening round of the Whitworth Men's Invitational at Manito Country Club on Sunday.
Senior Stephen Plopper led the first Pirate team with an opening round score of 73 on the 6,374 yard par 71 course for ninth place in the individual standings. Sophomores Tyler McQuilkin and Lyle Rudnicki both finished three-over with scores of 75 to tie for 12th place. Sophomores Oliver Rudnicki and Austin Billeter finished with first round scores of 76 and 77, respectively.
Whitworth's first team posted a 303 score for fourth place after the opening round while the second Pirate team's 312 score put them in fifth place heading into Monday's round.
Pacific Lutheran's Dustin Hegge dominated the course, posting score of 66 in Sunday's round to lead the field of 59 players. He leads Puget Sound's Adam Bean by one stroke going into Monday's final round.
North Idaho College leads the 11 team field after posting a one-over par team score of 285. The Cardinals were led by Angus Montgomery and Michael Porter who posted matching two-under par scores of 69 in the opening round.
The Whitworth Men's Invitational will conclude on Monday with a modified shotgun at 9:00 a.m. at Manito Country Club.
