GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Whitworth University men's golf team lowered its score by seven strokes on Monday to finish 15th at the Tournament Town Championship Preview at Grandover Resort.
Sophomore Oliver Rudnicki finished fourth in the player standings. Starting on the back nine, Rudnicki birdied the 18th hole and continued his hot streak opening the front nine with back-to-back birdies. He finished the tournament with a 72-74—146 score.
Senior Jesse Salzwedel birdied on the sixth hole on his way to a 78-79—157 score to tie for 64th place. Senior Stephen Plopper lowered his second round score by eight strokes, using an eagle on the 18th hole and birdies on holes six and nine. Plopper tied for 70th with a total score of 83-75—158.
Sophomore Lyle Rudnicki lowered his second round score by two strokes, tying for 75th in the player standings with a total score of 81-79—160. Sophomore Samson Martinez used birdies on the 14th and sixth holes to lower his round by 12 strokes, finishing 90th with a total score of 95-83—178.
Whitworth moved up three spots in the team standings, finishing the tournament in 15th place. The Pirates had a total score of 314-307—621. Illinois Wesleyan University (298-292—590) captured the top team honors, while Averett University's Onni Hurri (74-70—144) and Illinois Wesleyan's Kenny Wienchowski (72-72—144) tied for first in the player standings.
