In 2022-23, Joey VanHoomissen enters his 13th year on the Pirates’ coaching staff. As head throwing coach. He primarily coaches the discus, shot put and hammer and develops the throwers’ strength and conditioning programs. Coach VanHoomissen is a Level 1 Certified USATF Coach.
After spending the 2011 season as a volunteer assistant working with the discus and hammer throwers, he was elevated to the primary discus coach and was instrumental in helping coach three national qualifiers to the 2011 NCAA Outdoor National Championships. He played a key role in the development of Carter Comito, who completed his career as school and conference record holder, three-time NCAA champion, and owned of the nation’s (NCAA DIII) best throw by over 20 feet in 2013. VanHoomissen coached Comito to consecutive Northwest Conference Field Athlete of the Meet titles at the NWC Championships in 2012 and 2013. Similarly, Nick McGill claimed the same award in 2019 and 2021.
Since 2011 under Coach VanHoomissen’s has helped the Pirate throwers win 41 Conference Championships (averaging just under 4 a year), earn 29 All-American honors, and 5 National Championships.
VanHoomissen has been honored with the 2013 NCAA DIII West Region Men's Indoor Assistant Coach of the Year and the 2015 NCAA DIII West Region Women's Outdoor Assistant Coach of the Year.Â
VanHoomissen was an All-American javelin thrower and a NWC champion discus and hammer thrower for the Pirates before graduating in 2009.
Coach VanHoomissen works as the Assistant Superintendent at the Kalispel Golf and Country Club in Spokane.
Joey and his wife Kendel have a son Theodore, 1.
