SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth women's soccer fell 1-0 to visiting Lewis & Clark College in its Northwest Conference and home opener on Saturday at Whitworth Soccer Field.
The Pirates fell to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in NWC play, while the River Otters moved to 2-2-2, 2-1 with their second straight shutout.
L&C was able to capitalize with the lone goal of the match in 31st minute. Iris Stutzman sent a line drive into the box from the right side and it found the foot of Siena Flock, who was able to get it past goalkeeper Karlee Roderick. The goal was one of two River Otter shots in the first frame.
Whitworth turned up the pressure in the second half, doubling its shot total (6) from the first frame. The attack resulted in multiple quality chances, the first being an opportunity from Hailey Herboth in the 56th minute, but Lucia Barron Nunez came out of her net to break up the rush. Later in the half, Andie Snell and Kayla Santa Monica worked for quality looks at the net, but the Bucs were unable to find the equalizer.
Both teams had three shots on target in the match, with Whitworth finishing with a 9-4 advantage in total shots.
Herboth paced the Pirates with two shots, both on target. Six other Bucs recorded one shot, with Snell providing the other shot on goal. Roderick made two saves in the full 90 minutes at goalkeeper.
All four Lewis & Clark shots came from different players. Barron Nunez made three saves in the clean sheet.
Whitworth will look for its first NWC win on Sunday against Linfield.
