The Pirates: The Bucs closed the first half of Northwest Conference play with a 2-6 record and 3-7 overall mark.

The first of two challenging matches in Tacoma went to Puget Sound 2-0. The aggressive Logger attack netted two first half goals and the Bucs managed just shots on goal and were unable to chip away. Karlee Roderick made six saves at goalkeeper.

On Sunday, Pacific Lutheran defeated Whitworth 3-0. The Lutes converted a penalty kick five minutes into the match. The Bucs held in there defensively for the remainder of the half, but two second half goals put the match out of reach. Whitworth showed fight by outshooting PLU 7-5 in the second half, but couldn't find the back of the net.

The Opponents: Linfield holds a 4-4 conference record and 6-5-1 overall mark heading into this weekend. The Wildcats won both of their matches last weekend against Pacific (Ore.) and Willamette. They rank sixth in the NWC in goals per game (1.09) but have put up much better defensive numbers with nine goals allowed in 12 matches. Senior midfielder Lize Rendon is tied for second in the NWC with five goals to lead the attack. Juniors Maddie Funk and Tati Zahajko have split time at goalkeeper. Zahajko has started seven matches, though Funk posts a better save percentage (.833). The Pirates beat Linfield 1-0 in Spokane on October 20.

Lewis & Clark sits at 3-5-4 overall and 3-4-2 in conference play. The River Otters will play at Pacific on Wednesday and host Whitman on Friday prior to the match against Whitworth on Sunday. L&C's 11 goals scored and 14 goals allowed both rank seventh in the conference. The offensive attack has been by committee for the Otts this season, with four players having scored two goals. First year goalkeeper Lucia Barron Nunez commands the defense with a 1.46 goals against average and .783 save percentage in nine starts. L&C got the best of the Pirates 1-0 on September 19 in Spokane.

NWC Standings: Puget Sound holds the top spot after one round of conference action with an 8-0 record and 24 points. Whitman (6-2, 18 pts.) sits in second with Pacific Lutheran (5-1-2, 17 pts) close behind. Linfield (4-4, 12 pts.), Lewis & Clark (3-4-2, 11 pts.), and Willamette (3-5-1, 10 pts.) are battling for fourth. Pacific (3-6, 9 pts.) holds seventh with Whitworth (2-6, 6 pts) and George Fox (1-7-1, 4 pts) looking to make a second half push.

The Coach: Whitworth soccer alum Cameron Bushéy is in his fifth season as head coach of the women's soccer team. The Pirates have a 32-35-20 record under Bushéy and a 28-28-14 mark in the Northwest Conference.

Bushey came from Stanislaus State, where he was the top assistant coach. Bushey has club coaching stints in Spokane and Colorado, and he was an assistant at Gonzaga University for two seasons (2018-19). He graduated from Whitworth in 2012 as a four-time All-NWC honoree who helped lead the Pirates to three NWC titles and NCAA Division III tournament appearances in 2008 and 2009.

Coming up: The Whitworth women will play a split schedule with a trip to play Whitman on Wednesday, October 21 before returning to Spokane to host Pacific on Sunday, October 25.
