Pirate women fall to Loggers 2-0

TACOMA, Wash. – Whitworth women's soccer opened its weekend trip in Tacoma with a 2-0 loss to first-place Puget Sound in a Northwest Conference match on Saturday at Baker Stadium.

The Loggers (10-0-1 overall) remained unbeaten in conference play with a 7-0 record. The Pirates fell to 3-6 overall and 2-5 in the NWC.

Puget Sound came into the match as the top attacking team in the conference and backed up those numbers by outshooting the Pirates 23-6.

That PS attack produced a goal early in the match as Kate Short headed in a long cross from Hayden Goodman at the 2:41 mark. The Bucs held tough until the 39th minute, when the Loggers doubled the lead. A shot from the right side was knocked by Whitworth goalkeeper Karlee Roderick, but Leila Hausia-Haugen ran in and scored on the rebound.

The Pirates play a much stronger defensive second half, holding the Loggers to just seven total shots compared to the 16 allowed in the first 45 minutes. Despite buckling down on the back end, scoring chances were difficult to come by as the Bucs were held to just two shots on goal, one in each half.

Emma Ellerd and Katherine Kent sent the two shots on target. Kayla Santa Monica led the team with two total shots. Roderick made six saves in net.

The Logger attack was led by Madi Jarzynka, who led all players with six shots. Hausia-Haugen and Sofia Evans added four shots each. Gianna Maldonado and Stella Grigoryan each played a half at goalkeeper. Each made one save.

The Whitworth women will look to rebound on Sunday at Pacific Lutheran.
