SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitworth Pirates took down Lewis & Clark 5-2 in a Northwest Conference women's tennis match at Scotford Tennis Center on Saturday.
The Pirates advanced to 3-4 overall and 3-3 in the NWC while the Pioneers fell to 3-6 and 2-3 in conference play.
For the second time this season, Whitworth swept the doubles matches to secure the first point. Gracie Smyley and Faith Kert earned their fourth straight win (6-2) in the No. 1 position. Paige Oliver and Clara Todd paired for a narrow 7-5 win in the second match while Olivia Corbett and Audrey Judson took care of business 6-3 in the No. 3 position.
The Pirates won four of six singles matches. Kert got her second win of the season in the No. 2 singles match 6-1, 6-3 and Oliver fought to a 7-5, 6-2 win in the No. 3 match. In the No. 1 position, Smyley dropped her first set 6-2, but fought back to 6-3 in the second. After trailing 4-2 in the deciding set, Smyley completed a match clinching comeback to down her opponent 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 in a three-set thriller. Judson scored the fifth point of the match for the Pirates in the No. 5 slot by a score of 6-1, 6-4.
Hayley Kreps and Anna English earned two singles wins for the pair of Pioneer points.
The Whitworth women host Puget Sound on Sunday at 10:00 am.
