MARSHALL, Texas. – The visiting Whitworth women's tennis team took down East Texas Baptist 4-3 in a non-conference women's tennis match on Tuesday afternoon.
The Pirates moved to 6-6 on the season and snapped the Tigers (5-4) four-match win streak.
The doubles decision went to the Bucs with two wins to kick off the match. Gracie Smyley and Faith Kert knocked off the top Tiger duo with a 6-2 win. Clara Todd and Jordan Turner-Esposito secured the point with a dominant 6-1 win in the No. 2 position.
Whitworth narrowly split the singles match to claim the match victory. Kert took down her opponent 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 2 position and Paige Oliver gave the Pirates a 3-1 lead with a commanding 6-2, 6-0 win in the third position. ETBU's Isabelle Macquet won the No. 6 match to make it 3-2, but Audrey Judson followed with a match clinching 6-2, 6-4 win in the No. 5 position. Turner-Esposito swept her first set 6-0, but dropped the next two sets 7-5, 1-0 to close the match.
The Pirates visit Mary Hardin-Baylor on Wednesday at noon pacific time to wrap up the Texas slate.
