MCMINNVILLE, Ore. – The Whitworth women's tennis team earned a 6-1 win over Linfield in its first Northwest Conference road match of the season on Saturday afternoon.
The Pirates (2-3 overall) won their second consecutive match to draw even at 2-2 in NWC play. The Wildcats fell to 1-5 overall and 1-4 in the NWC.
Whitworth won two of three doubles matches to take the first point. Gracie Smyley and Faith Kert swept the No. 1 Linfield pairing. Audrey Judson and Olivia Corbett won their match with the same result and extended their winning streak to three. Jordan Turner-Esposito got her first action of the season in the second doubles match with Clara Todd. The pair fell 6-1.
Five of six singles matches went to the Pirates, all in two sets. Smyley, now on a three-game winning streak, controlled her first set in the No. singles match before battling to a 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) win. Corbett also won her third straight match 6-4, 6-0 in the fifth singles slot. Todd dominated in the No. 6 match 6-1, 6-0. Linfield's Kaitlynn Canubida earned a 6-4, 6-1 win over Faith Kert for the lone Wildcat point.
The Whitworth women will take on George Fox on Sunday at 10:00am in Newberg.
