PORTLAND, Ore. – Two early goals against spelled defeat for visiting Whitworth in a 2-0 setback to Lewis & Clark on Sunday in a Northwest Conference women's soccer match.
An own-goal in the 18th got the Pirates (0-5-4 overall, 0-4-2 NWC) in an early deficit and the Pioneers (2-6-2, 2-3-1) added one of their own three minutes later.
Lewis & Clark won a free kick deep in the Whitworth zone and Carli Driskill delivered a free kick that was inadvertently headed into the Pirate goal by a defender.
Three minutes later Driskill got an official assist when she took a corner kick that was headed into the net by Mischa Vanek in the 21st minute. It was Vanek's third goal of the season.
In the second half Whitworth poured on the offensive pressure looking to get back into the match. The Pirates outshot the Pioneers 12-5 after halftime, including a 9-1 edge in shots on-target. But L&C keeper Delaney Jones was up to the task, stopping all nine second half shots and finishing with 10 saves overall.
Addison Dizard and Kylee Russell combined for seven total shots, four of which were on-goal, to lead Whitworth's attack. Paige Broadrick made a pair of saves for the Bucs.
Whitworth will return home to close out the first half of the NWC schedule next weekend against Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran.
