WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Whitworth women's tennis was knocked out of the Northwest Conference tournament with a 5-0 loss to top-seeded Whitman on Saturday in the semifinals.
The Blues (15-7, 8-0 NWC) remain unbeaten in conference play, and they'll make their second straight NWC championship appearance on Sunday. Whitworth (9-9, 4-4 NWC) dropped their second match of the season to Whitman, neither were particularly close.
Whitworth's #1 duo of Gracie Smyley and Clara Todd were beaten by Teleya Blunt and Arianna Castellanos 8-4 before the Blues won the next two doubles matches 8-5. In singles, the Blues won all six matches in two sets to clinch the win.
Smyley was beaten by Blunt in the #1 spot 6-1, 6-2 in a battle of two All-NWC first teamers. Whitworth tennis will return next fall for preseason matches.
