Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Pirate women shut out Loggers in NWC opener

TACOMA, Wash. – Whitworth rolled to a 9-0 win in its women's tennis Northwest Conference opener at Puget Sound on Friday evening.

The Pirates won their third straight match overall to even their record at 3-3.  The Loggers, also playing their conference opener, fell to 0-6.

Whitworth made quick work of the doubles matches with none of the contests taking more than an hour.  Natalie Budge and Olivia Corbett were done first at #2, defeating Hayla Chatham and Marissa Perez 8-3.  Meredith Bedford and Audrey Johnson followed just a couple minutes later with an 8-2 win over Laura Schneidman and Zoe Richter at #3 doubles.  Clara Todd and Gracie Smyley closed out the doubles sweep with an 8-5 victory over Krishna Agrawal and Kaylee Yamada at #1 doubles.

The match was quickly decided as Whitworth won a pair of singles matches in quick fashion.  First Olivia Paige rolled past Perez 6-1, 6-1 at #2 singles, then Budge closed out a 6-0, 6-1 win over Chatham at #3, giving the Pirates an insurmountable 5-0 lead.

Smylie defeated Yamada 7-6, 3-6, 1-0 (10-7) at the top of the ladder in the only contest to go more than one set.

Whitworth will take on Bellevue College in an exhibition contest on Saturday to close out the road trip.
