SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitworth women's tennis team won its first match of the season, knocking off College of Idaho 6-3 on Saturday in the Scotford Tennis Center.
Whitworth (1-3) had lost to College of Idaho 5-4 in October, but they left no doubt in their final tune-up before starting conference play.
Whitworth won two of three in doubles to kick off the meet. The Pirates #1 pair of Gracie Smyley and Clara Todd won an 8-7 thriller, winning the tie breaking match 8-6. The #3 pair of Meredith Bedford and Jordan Turner cleaned up doubles with a dominant 8-0 win.
Four Pirates won singles matches as Whitworth ran away from the Yotes. #1 Smyley knocked off Hristina Ljuba 7-6, 3-6, 7-6 (7-2 in the tiebreaker). #3 Natalie Budge was convincing over Nicole Tran 6-7, 6-0, 6-1.
#4 Turner and #5 Todd won their matches in two sets each, (6-4, 6-1) and (6-1, 6-0) to seal the win for the Pirates.
Whitworth will open up conference play on Sunday as they host Puget Sound.
