Pirates extend winning streak in 1-0 win over Linfield

SPOKANE, Wash. – Baylee Trejo's second half goal lifted Whitworth to a 1-0 win over Linfield in a Northwest Conference women's soccer match on Saturday afternoon.

The Pirates (9-4-2 overall, 7-3-2 NWC) won their fourth straight match while Wildcats dropped to 4-6-5 overall and 3-6-3 in conference play.

Whitworth played strong defense and controlled the ball in the first half, holding Linfield to zero total shots. The Pirates broke the tie in the 69th minute when Baylee Trejo knocked down a free kick, turned and hooked the ball into the top right corner of the net for her fifth goal of the season. The Wildcats would make a late offensive push but were unable to even the score.

The Bucs finished the match with a 13-4 advantage in total shots and led in shots on goal 7-2. Paige Broadrick was in net for Whitworth and made two saves. Linfield's Alexa Fritz made six saves.

Pirates' head coach Cameron Bushéy said he felt good about the team's offensive chances and praised their defensive performance. "We won the ball and made defensive tackles," Bushéy said. "I was proud of the team's tenacity and strength defending."

Whitworth will look to continue its winning ways on Saturday at Willamette.
