TACOMA, Wash. – Visiting Whitworth could not overcome an early two goal deficit and the Pirates fell 3-1 to Puget Sound in a Northwest Conference women's soccer match on Sunday afternoon.
The setback left Whitworth (0-3-3 overall, 0-2 NWC) still searching for its first win of the 2023 season. The Loggers improved to 4-2, 2-0.
Sienna Kloss gave UPS a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute from an assist by Kya Scott. The lead doubled in the 20th minute when Scott scored her fourth of the season from an assist by Mimi Carrier-Berndt.
Kylee Russell scored for Whitworth in the 35th minute, her second goal of the season. Laura Pierson had the assist.
The Pirates had chances for a tying goal near the end of the first half and in the opening minutes of the second half, but could not overcome the Loggers' defense or goalkeeper Megan Schellhase, who made five saves.
Ava Cholakian scored unassisted in the 55th minute to give UPS the final margin.
Kate Nelson had five saves for the Pirates.
The Loggers finished with a 13-10 lead in total shots and an 8-6 advantage in shots on goal, perhaps better reflecting the evenness of play.
Whitworth returns home to host Whitman as part of a men's and women's doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon.
