SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitworth women's tennis team ended its regular season with a 6-3 loss to visiting College of Idaho in a non-conference contest on Saturday at the Scotford Tennis Center.
The Pirates finish the 2023 season 8-9, while the Coyotes improved to 5-10. Whitworth still has an exhibition match against Bellevue Community College on Sunday.
The Bucs won two of the three doubles matches to take an early lead. Elizabeth Hopkins and Libertad Sarmiento won 8-1 at #3, while Kara Nelson and Olivia Corbett earned an 8-5 win at #2 doubles. Gracie Smyley and Meredith Bedford fell 8-4 at #1.
Sarmiento won 6-0, 6-1 at #6 singles in less than an hour to increase Whitworth's lead to 3-1. However, C of I won all five of the remaining singles matches to earn the team victory. The clinching point came at #4 where Summer Townsend defeated Hopkins 6-4, 6-2.
Lauren Kreutzer edged Smyley 6-2, 7-5 at #1 singles. Anna Willcuts rallied to defeat Bedford 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6) in the only match that went more than two sets.
