SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitworth University women's tennis team opened the 2022 Northwest Conference schedule with the heavy favorite for the conference title on Sunday. Visiting Whitman shut out the Pirates 9-0 at the Scotford Tennis Center.
Whitworth is 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the NWC, while Whitman is 5-1 and 1-0. The Pirates return to action next Sunday at NCAA Div. I Eastern Washington.
The Blues swept the doubles matches, winning at #2 and #3 by identical 8-2 scores. Aleah Kert and Hannah Plan fell one break at #1 doubles, 8-5 to Angel Le and Arianna Castellanos.
Whitman was able to win all six singles matches in straight sets. The closest result for Whitworth came at #3 singles where Ilina Jha defeated Gracie Smyley 6-3, 6-4. Le topped Kert 6-1, 6-0 at #1 singles, while Castellanos defeated Plank 6-2, 6-1 at #2.
