Women's Soccer Gets first NWC Win

SPOKANE, Wash. – Laura Pierson and Ireland Eaton posted first half goals to lift Whitworth to a 2-0 win over visiting Whitman in a Northwest Conference women's soccer match late on Wednesday afternoon.

The Pirates (4-2-1 overall, 1-1-1 NWC) picked up their first conference win of the season.  The Blues (0-5-1, 0-3) continue to search for their first victory of 2021.

Savannah Acpal put a shot on goal that was blocked by the Whitman defense, but Pierson was in the right place to put the rebound into the back of the net for her first goal of the year in the 16th minute.

Late in the first half Camryn Gardner lofted a long pass into the box that caused a scramble in front of the net.  Ireland Eaton pounced on the opportunity for her second goal of the season in the 42nd minute.

Whitworth controlled 59% of the possession in the first half, but Whitman evened up the possession in the second period.  The Blues put seven shots on goal throughout the match, but Kate Nelson was there to stop every one for her fourth shutout of the season.

The Pirates finished with a 17-13 edge in shots, including a 10-7 edge in shots on goal.  The Bucs had six corner kicks to two for the Blues.

Whitworth will host Willamette University on Sunday at noon in its next match.
