SPOKANE, Wash. – Three Pirates scored their first goals of the season as Whitworth concluded the weekend with a 3-2 win over visiting Puget Sound to secure the weekend sweep in Northwest Conference women's soccer action.
Whitworth is now 3-1-1 at the halfway point and will play its next five games on the road. Puget Sound drops to 5-3 on the year.
Angel Denke gave the Pirates a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute, firing in her first collegiate goal after Savannah Acpal found her in the middle of the box.
Maiya Pacleb scored for UPS in the 28th minute to tie the match at 1-1. Ava Cholakian sent a pass to Pacleb who sent her shot off the left post and into the goal.
The Pirates took a 2-1 lead into the break after Kaitlin Speer scored in the 41st minute. Ireland Eaton got the sequence started with a shot that deflected off the hands of UPS goalkeeper Chaylea Tome. Speer sent in the rebound for her first goal of the year.
The Loggers outshot the Pirates 10-2 in the second half. Cholakian tied the match at 2-2 early in the half after a deep shot from the left side. Pacleb assisted on the goal.
Maggie Ames sent in the match-winner in the 68th minute. A shot by Laura Pierson hit the cross bar and Ames sent in the rebound.
Rachel McGlothlen made three saves at goalkeeper for Whitworth. Tome finished with four for the Loggers.
Up next, the Pirates take on Pacific Lutheran on March 13-14 in Parkland.
