SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitworth University women's soccer team fell to visiting Pacific Lutheran 2-0 in Sunday's Northwest Conference match in the Whitworth Pine Bowl.
Whitworth drops to 0-1-1 with the loss. Pacific Lutheran (1-2-1) earns it first win of the season.
Pacific Lutheran grabbed the 1-0 advantage in the first half. Vera Panescu-Reich took a shot off a bounce right next to the goal, sending it over Whitworth goalkeeper Rachel McGlothlen for the 1-0 advantage. Jami Hughes was credited with the assist.
Kalena Pfaeltzer tried to tie the match in the 60th minute with a well-struck shot into the top left corner of the goal, but PLU goalkeeper Cassidy Crosswhite made the save.
The Lutes doubled their lead in the 76th minute as Vivian Shinall dribbled down the field with three defenders trailing close behind. Shinall had the one-on-one chance with the goalkeeper and slid her shot into the net.
Pacific Lutheran finished with lead in shots (12-5) and shots on goal (4-2). McGlothlen made two saves for the Pirates. Crosswhite also made two saves for the Lutes.
The Pirates host Whitman next weekend in the Whitworth Pine Bowl.
