SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitworth women's soccer team opened the season against Pacific Lutheran, battling to a scoreless tie in Saturday's Northwest Conference women's soccer match in the Whitworth Pine Bowl.
With the draw, Whitworth starts the year 0-0-1. Pacific Lutheran moves to 0-2-1 on the season.
Whitworth did not attempt a shot on goal in the first half.
PLU's Maddie Landreth had a chance in the 23rd minute on a free kick just outside the box, but her shot was blocked. Landreth had another shot blocked in the 35th minute. The Lutes held a 6-2 shots advantage entering the break.
Laura Pierson nearly got the Pirates on the scoreboard, hitting the crossbar in the 63rd minute. Maggie Ames attempted the first shot on goal for the Bucs in the 76th minute, but her close-range shot was saved by Lutes goalkeeper Ashton Huppert.
The Pirates put early pressure on Hubbert in the second overtime but a shot by Jadyn Baumgartner was saved and Gabriella Coprivnicar's shot slid left of the goal.
The Lutes led the Pirates in shots (14-8), shots on goal (6-3) and corner kicks (4-3). Rachel McGlothlen recorded six saves.
Whitworth and Pacific Lutheran play again tomorrow at 11 a.m. in the Whitworth Pine Bowl.
