SALEM, Ore. – Whitworth led in scoring chances, but Willamette got the goals as the Bearcats defeated the visiting Pirates 3-0 in a Northwest Conference women's soccer match on Sunday afternoon.
The Pirates (8-6-2 overall, 5-5-2 NWC) had more shot attempts and more shots on-target than the Bearcats (5-11, 4-8), but could not find the net.
Angela DeLeon scored her first goal of the season to give Willamette the lead in the eighth minute.
The contest remained 1-0 for the next 70 minutes despite the fact that Whitworth finished with a 17-14 edge in overall shots and a 7-5 advantage in shots on-goal.
Sydney Wilson headed in a pass from Joleigh Miller in the 76th minute to extend Willamette's lead. Emma Blackburn scored the clincher in the 79th minute for her fourth goal of the season. Miller had her second assist of the game.
Macey Morales had four shots for the Pirates, while Bethany VanSant had three to lead Whitworth's offense. Kate Nelson made a pair of saves on defense.
The Bucs and Bearcats split the season series this fall.
Whitworth returns to host its final home games of the season against Lewis & Clark and George Fox next weekend.
