Willamette Defeats Whitworth in Oregon

SALEM, Ore. – The Willamette Bearcats defeated the visiting Whitworth Pirates 2-1 in Saturday afternoon's Northwest Conference women's soccer contest.

The Bearcats (10-7-2, 9-4-2 NWC) held the Pirates (6-12-1, 5-9-1) to two shots on goal on the match. Willamette's victory snapped Whitworth's three-match winning streak.

Whitworth took the 1-0 lead in the 26th minute as Jadyn Baumgartner put in her team-leading fifth goal of the season.

Willamette tied the match at 1-1 with five minutes remaining in the first half. Isabel Duxbury found Gena Main who scored her first goal of the season as the Bearcats entered the break with a 9-6 shots advantage.

The Bearcats controlled the remainder of the match allowing the Pirates to take only one shot in the second half. Jackie Gilroy scored in the 76th minute to give Willamette the 2-1 lead. Shanna Keil was credited with the assist.

Emma Foulk attempted the Bucs' only shot of the second half, which was saved by Bearcats goalkeeper Kristen Barclay.

Isabelle Arends and Kaycie Priske split time in goal for the Pirates. Arends made the start, recording four saves in the first half. Priske finished with one save in the second half. Barclay made one save for the Bearcats.

Whitworth will close the season against Lewis & Clark tomorrow at noon.
