SPOKANE, Wash. – On Senior Day at the Whitworth Soccer Field, the Whitworth women's soccer team beat Northwest Conference opponent George Fox 2-0 on goals from McKenzie Hemp and Megan McCart.
The Pirates improve to 8-6 (9-9 overall). George Fox sits in last place with a 3-8-2 NWC record (3-11-3 overall)
Whitworth outshot George Fox 14 to 13 on total shots as well as a two-attempt advantage in shots on target.
In the 10th minute, McKenzie Hemp's pressure in the Whitworth attacking third resulted in her disarming a George Fox defender and taking a one-on-one chance with the goalie. Hemp put the shot to the right past Bruin goalkeeper Morgan Bars to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead. Later on, in the 31st minute, George Fox forward Hannah Harder attempted a volley and missed. She recovered, hustling after the ball and launched a left-footed shot to the far side post that was rejected by a diving Sienna Tanner.
Despite even possession, George Fox played a much more physical match committing 10 fouls and being issued two yellow cards. The first caution given to Stephanie Wilson in the 35th minute followed by a card issued to Hannah Harder in the 43rd minute.
In the 77th minute, George Fox made a push and Savannah Moisan fired a shot that required a leg save by Whitworth defender Diana DeWald to keep the Pirates ahead, 1-0. In the 85th minute, Megan McCart added to the Whitworth lead with her first goal of the season on a point blank shot off of a cross from McKenzie Hemp.
Sienna Tanner posted her fourth shutout with a four save performance for the Pirates. Morgan Bars had four saves and gave up two goals for George Fox.
Next Up: The Pirates will travel to Oregon for their last games of 2016 to play Pacific (Ore.) and Linfield on Nov. 5 and 6.
