Box Score SPOKANE, Wash. – The Whitworth women's soccer team downed Lewis & Clark 2-1 on a golden goal by Brooke Morrow on Saturday afternoon in a Northwest Conference contest.
The Pirates (7-6 NWC, 8-9) have a one game lead over Linfield for third place in the NWC. The Pios are two points ahead of George Fox in seventh place.
The Pirates finished the first half, putting four of seven shots on target. They finished the match with 16 total shots, holding Lewis & Clark to single digits (9).
Arielle Van Peursem opened up the scoring for Whitworth right off the bat on through ball from Jennas Morris. Van Peursem collected the through ball and made a move past Pioneer goalkeeper Hanna Osmundson for an open net goal in the fourth minute of the match. The Pirates dominated possession for most of the first half until Lewis & Clark turned up the pressure in the last 10 minutes. In the 43rd minute, a handball in the box set up a penalty kick for Lewis & Clark's Caroline Hennes who netted it in the right side of the goal to even up the score at 1-1 before the half.
Whitworth goalkeeper Sienna Tanner had an early save in the 58th minute, diving to the bottom corner to knock away a shot by Hennes from outside the 18.
In the second period of overtime, after 60 minutes of scoreless play, Brooke Morrow launched a shot from 20 yards out to the top right corner to win the game for Whitworth.
Tanner finished the game with three saves to improve to 8-5. Osmundson drops her ninth game of the season for a 3-9-1 record.
