SALEM, Ore. – The Whitworth women's soccer team lost to Willamette 2-1 on a 97th minute golden goal in a Northwest Conference contest on Sunday afternoon.
The Bearcats (8-6-2, 5-5-2 NWC) totaled 27 shots and 12 on goal in an aggressive offensive effort. The Pirates (7-9, 6-6 NWC) had nine total shots, putting five on target and scoring one goal.
Whitworth's Sienna Tanner had three saves in the first half and the defensive back line had one save to keep the game 0-0 at halftime.
In the 54th minute, the Bearcats' Shanna Keil opened up the scoring on a set piece from 22 yards out. Arielle Van Peursem responded for Whitworth in the 65th minute on an assist from Dallas Nelson. Van Peursem got the ball 23 yards out and launched a shot out in to the top of the net to even the score at 1-1. In overtime, Willamette's Emmy Manset scored the game-winner from eight yards out on a cross from Karmen Chavez-Sam.
Sienna Tanner played the first half for Whitworth and finished with three saves. Jenna Rogers took over for the second half and overtime and had six saves. The Whitworth defense had a season high three saves. Willamette's Kristen Barkley had three saves and gave up one goal.
Next Up: Whitworth will return home to the Whitworth Soccer Field for a Saturday match against Lewis & Clark and Senior Day on Sunday against George Fox.
