WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Arielle Van Peursem scored the golden goal in the 100th minute to lift Whitworth past Whitman in the Battle of the Whits on Wednesday night in a Northwest Conference women's soccer match.
After two halves of scoreless play, the Pirates (7-8, 6-5 NWC) had a one-attempt edge in total shots with 18 and Whitman (1-12-2, 1-8-2 NWC) had a one shot edge on shots on target (6). Leah Corra finished the second half with a header chance off of a corner kick by Katie Bischoff that went wide. With less than a minute left, Whitman went on a counter-attack firing two shots, one requiring a save from Whitworth's Sienna Tanner to force overtime. The Pirates finished the game with 23 total shots (7 on goal), outshooting Whitman 5-0 in overtime.
Just 15 seconds in to the first overtime period, McKenzie Hemp had an attempt blocked. The Pirates fired three more shots before Arielle Van Peursem scored the golden goal off of an assist from Jenna Morris in the 100th minute.
Jenna Rogers played the first half and Sienna Tanner finished out the game, each having three saves apiece in the Pirates' win. Tanner improves her record to 7-5. The Whitman defense had one save and goalkeeper Haley Case had five saves.
Next Up: The Pirates will travel to Salem, Ore. to play the Willamette Bearcats on Sunday, Oct. 23 at noon in another NWC contest.
