WALLA WALLA, Wash. - DeNae Vandam netted the lone goal of the match in the 82nd minute as Whitworth edged Carroll College (Mont.), 1-0, on Saturday in a neutral-site match at Whitman College.

Whitworth (2-0) was outshot by Carroll (1-3) in the match but converted when Vandam took a pass from Megan McCart and connected on a long shot from outside the 18-yard box to put the Pirates ahead with less than 10 minutes remaining in the second half.

The Fighting Saints generated 16 shots compared with eight for the Pirates and held an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal. Whitworth put three shots on frame in the first half before producing a goal on its lone shot-on-goal attempt of the second half.

Whitworth goalkeeper Sienna Tanner collected eight saves in the shutout victory. The Pirates are yet to allow a goal after recording shutouts in their first two matches of the young season. Carroll goalkeeper Jamie Carter totaled three saves.

Each team had four corner kick opportunities. The match featured a total of 28 fouls with 17 called on the Pirates and 11 committed by the Fighting Saints.

The Pirates travel to Santa Cruz, Calif. next weekend for a pair of neutral-site contests. Whitworth will face Chapman University on Friday, Sept. 11 before taking on the University of La Verne on Saturday, Sept. 12.
