Women's Soccer Falls 1-0 at Willamette

Box Score

SALEM, Ore. - Willamette scored on a penalty kick in the 25th minute and visiting Whitworth was forced to play with 10 players for a majority of the match in a 1-0 loss to the Bearcats on Sunday afternoon at Sparks Field.

Willamette (3-4-1, 3-1 Northwest Conference) extended its win streak to three matches with its third straight shutout while Whitworth (5-4-0, 3-2-0) had its three-match win streak snapped.

Willamette's Jill Phillips created the goal-scoring chance before converting the penalty kick. Phillips found space to shoot after a corner kick but her shot was stopped by the arm of Megan McCart and a foul was called. McCart was issued a red card and Phillips converted the penalty kick chance, finishing to the left side of the net.

The Bearcats generated 18 shots in the match and put 10 of those shots on goal -- both season-high totals for an opponent against the Whitworth defense.

Whitworth also had significant scoring chances with 14 shots and six shots on goal. Tiara Pajimola put three shots on frame to lead the Pirates.

Andrea Stump recorded seven saves and the Pirate defense totaled two team saves. Kelsey Walker collected six saves for Willamette in her collegiate debut.

Each of the four losses for the Pirates in 2015 has come by a one-goal deficit and the Whitworth defense has allowed more than one goal in a match just once all season.

The Pirates host Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran next weekend. Whitworth faces the Loggers at noon on Saturday, Oct. 3, before taking on the Lutes the following day. Both matches are scheduled to begin at noon.
