Box Score SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - The Whitworth women's soccer team was edged in a tight match for the second day in a row, falling 1-0 to the University of La Verne on Saturday at the SlugFest Tournament hosted by UC Santa Cruz.
La Verne's Maribel Duran scored the lone goal of the contest in the 29th minute off an assist from Alexa Smith.
The Pirates (2-2) generated 15 shots compared with 11 for the Leopards (2-1-1), and came close to tying the match on multiple occasions. A potential game-tying header goal from Kelly Wucherer was disallowed by an offside call and the Pirates missed a penalty kick in the 66th minute.
Each team put five shots on goal during the match. La Verne took six corner kicks while the Pirates had one corner kick opportunity.
Sienna Tanner made three saves for the Pirates and Jasmine Valadez collected five saves for the Leopards.
Whitworth was shutout for the first time in 2015 while La Verne held its opponent scoreless for the second day in a row, following a scoreless draw against UC Santa Cruz on Friday. The Pirates opened the tournament on Friday with a narrow 2-1 loss to Chapman University.
Whitworth returns home to begin the NWC schedule, hosting Whitman on Wednesday, Sept. 16 at 4 p.m. The Pirates remain at home next weekend to face George Fox and Pacific (Ore.).
