Women's Soccer Edged by Chapman

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - Chapman's Kourtney Kingsmore scored a go-ahead goal in the 79th minute just moments after Whitworth had tied the match en route to a 2-1 win for the Panthers on Friday at the SlugFest Tournament, hosted by UC Santa Cruz.

Whitworth (2-1) suffered its first loss of the year while Chapman (2-1) won its second consecutive match of the young season.

Chapman led 1-0 for a majority of the contest after Julia Diaz scored a goal in the 18th minute off an assist from Kingsmore.

Whitworth tied the match in the 78th minute when Sarah Mickelsen scored with an assist from Tiara Pajimola, chipping a shot into the back of the net from roughly 10 yards away.

Chapman responded with the match-winning goal less than 30 seconds later when Kingsmore scored on a floater over the head of Whitworth goalkeeper Andrea Stump. The Pirates were unable to generate any shot attempts after the go-ahead goal.

The Panthers totaled 10 shots in the match compared with nine by the Pirates, and held a 6-5 edge in shots on goal. Whitworth had five corner kick opportunities while Chapman took four corner kicks.

Stump collected four saves and Chapman goalkeeper Kristin Kleinow also made four saves.

Three yellow cards were issued during the match. Chapman committed 21 fouls compared with 10 fouls by Whitworth.

The Pirates will face the University of La Verne at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday during the second day of the SlugFest Tournament.
