Strong Second Half Lifts L&C over Whitworth

Box Score

SPOKANE, Wash. - Lewis & Clark overcame a halftime deficit to score four times in the second half en route to a 4-2 win over Whitworth during Senior Day at the Whitworth Soccer Field on Saturday.

Lewis & Clark (11-7-1, 7-7-1 Northwest Conference) was led by Anna Thorndike and Megan Ratfield, who each scored twice in the come-from-behind win over Whitworth (6-11-3, 4-9-3). The match featured numerous offensive chances, as the teams combined to fire 41 shots and put 19 shots on goal.

The Pirates scored twice in the first 24 minutes of the match to claim an early lead. Tiara Pajimola, the Pirates' leading goal scorer each of the last four seasons, scored in her final match to give Whitworth a lead in the 15th minute. Her goal was scored from roughly seven yards away with an assist from Dallas Nelson.

Whitworth doubled its lead in the 24th minute when Kelly Wucherer netted her first career goal, finishing a cross from close range off a corner kick from Jennifer Loehner.

The Pirates controlled a majority of the offensive opportunities before halftime but the Pioneers found success in the second half, tying the score by the 67th minute and taking a lead in the 72nd minute.

In the 58th minute the Pioneers erased the shutout when Thorndike won possession from the Pirates' back line near midfield, presenting herself with a breakaway chance. She finished with a powerful strike from about 18 yards away.

The Pioneers scored an equalizer during the 66th minute, when a Pioneer shot from distance was saved by goalkeeper Taylor Floyd but deflected in front of the goal. Ratfield followed up the shot, heading the loose ball into the goal. Floyd had recovered quickly from the initial save and appeared to have possibly saved Ratfield's shot, but it was ruled the ball crossed over the goal line before Floyd could corral the header.

Thorndike put the Pioneers ahead in the 72nd minute, blasting a goal to the upper-left corner of the net from about 25 yards away on a free kick.

Ratfield increased the lead with a breakaway down the right side of the field about five minutes later, dribbling into the box with a one-on-one attack and finishing from close range in the 77th minute.

Lewis & Clark goalkeeper Sandra Alvarenga totaled 10 saves in the match. Senior Whitworth goalkeepers Andrea Stump and Floyd each played a half, and each made four saves.

The Pirate held a 15-6 edge in shots during the first half and had five corner kick chances compared with two Lewis & Clark. The Pioneers flipped the script after halftime, out-shooting Whitworth 13-7. Whitworth put 11 shots on goal while the Pioneers totaled eight shots on goal in the contest. The Pirates finished with eight corner kicks while the Pioneers took five corner kicks.

The Pirates graduate seven seniors but will return 15 players who appeared in at least half of the Pirates' games this season.
