Women's Soccer Battles to Draw Against Linfield

Box Score

SPOKANE, Wash. - Courtney Potter pulled the Pirates even with an equalizing goal in the 55th minute en route to a 1-1 overtime tie against visiting Linfield on Saturday afternoon at the Whitworth Soccer Field.

Whitworth (6-8-2, 4-6-2 Northwest Conference) went to overtime for the second time in its past four matches. Linfield (8-4-2, 5-4-2) played an overtime match for the third time in seven road matches during 2015.

Emma Vukic scored her conference-leading eighth goal of the season to give the Wildcats a lead in the 30th minute. She dribbled past the defense and found space just inside the 18-yard box to fire a goal-scoring shot.

Whitworth found success in the second half, moving the ball quickly upfield following a throw-in from its own end of the field. Tiara Pajimola dribbled up the midfield and threaded a well-placed through-ball pass to Potter, who fired a shot off the left post and into the net for her first goal of the season.

Promising offensive chances were limited by strong defensive play for both sides. Linfield fired 16 shots with five shots on goal while the Pirates took nine shots and put four on target.

The Wildcats fired 10 shots during the second half but totaled just one shot on goal during the half. The Pirate defense held Linfield to only two shots during the overtime periods. Whitworth was held without a shot during the first overtime but produced four shots during the second overtime.

Three of Whitworth's shots on goal in the contest came during the second overtime period. Hannah Bokma was able to head a shot on goal off the first of two Pirate corner kicks during the second overtime but Linfield netminder Sarah Bailey made the save. Arielle Van Peursem fired two shots on target from distance in the waning minutes but Bailey handled both to keep the score tied.

Each team had four corner kick chances during the match.

Whitworth goalkeeper Andrea Stump collected four saves and Bailey recorded three saves.

The Pirates are back in action Sunday, hosting Willamette at noon.
