Whitworth Concludes Season with 1-0 win over Bruins

Box Score

SPOKANE, Wash. - Tiara Pajimola scored the match-winner in the 87th minute as the Whitworth women's soccer team closed out the 2014 season with a 1-0 victory over George Fox on Saturday afternoon.

Whitworth (8-11-1, 7-9-0 NWC) won four of their last five matches to finish the season and ended the year on a three-match winning streak.

Pajimola scored an unassisted goal with less than four minutes to play, dribbling through the midfield and firing a shot from the top of the box past a diving goalkeeper into the lower-left corner of the goal. It was Pajimola's team-leading fifth goal of the season.

Whitworth controlled the majority of the possession, taking 22 shots compared with seven by the Bruins. The Pirates held a 7-3 edge in shots on goal, and took seven corner kicks compared with one for George Fox.

The Pirates came close to taking the lead in the first half on two separate shots by Christina McCormick. McCormick was able get a foot to a loose ball that got away from the goalkeeper in the 12th minute, but a George Fox defender was able to block the shot attempt. She also hit the crossbar with a shot in the 26th minute.

Andrea Stump made three saves for the Pirates. She finished the season ranking third in the conference in total saves (95) and save percentage (.856).

Whitworth avenged a 1-0 loss to the Bruins earlier this season, earning its seventh shutout victory of the season. The Pirates improved to 7-1 when scoring the first goal in the match. All but three of Whitworth's matches this season were decided by a difference of one goal, including six 1-0 wins for the Pirates.

Head coach Jael Hagerott said she thought the team played well against George Fox, controlling momentum and finishing strong in the second half. She also commented on the value of winning the final match of the season.

"One, I think it just caps off the season," Hagerott said. "I think we had a good overall season if you look at our quality of play, I don't think the results always followed. But this last half of the season we've finished off strong in that way, so it's a reward for the team in the effort they've put in and I also think it sets a good foundation for next year."
