Whitworth Women Complete Weekend Sweep in Oregon

Box Score

PORTLAND, Ore. - Christina McCormick scored an early second-half goal and the Whitworth defense held its opponent scoreless for the seventh time this season in a 1-0 win at Lewis & Clark on Sunday afternoon.

Whitworth (7-11-1, 6-9-0 NWC) won its second consecutive match and has won three of its last four contests. Lewis & Clark (9-6-3, 7-5-2) was held scoreless for the fourth time this season.

McCormick scored what turned out to be the match-winning goal in the 54th minute, finishing from close range for her first career Whitworth goal. A shot from the top of the box was partially deflected and McCormick was able to get a foot to the ball as it rolled toward the goal. She scored under pressure as a Pioneer defender and the Lewis & Clark goalkeeper convened toward the ball near the six-yard box.

Andrea Stump made eight saves in the shutout effort. Lewis & Clark held a 15-6 shot advantage and generated five corner kick opportunities, while the Pirates did not have any corner kicks in the match. The Pioneers put eight shots on goal compared with three for the Pirates.

The Whitworth defense has allowed only two goals over its last four matches. With the win, the Pirates earned their sixth shutout victory in 2014 and improved to 6-1 when scoring the first goal of a match.

Whitworth hosts George Fox on Nov. 8 at the Whitworth Soccer Field for Senior Day in the last regular season match of the season.
