Linfield Edges Whitworth Women, 1-0

Box Score

SPOKANE, Wash. - A first-half goal from Linfield's Emily Fellows proved to be the difference as the Wildcats held Whitworth scoreless in a 1-0 victory on Sunday afternoon at the Whitworth Soccer Field.

Whitworth (5-11-1, 4-9-0 NWC) suffered its eighth one-goal loss this season. With the victory, Linfield (12-3-0, 9-3-0) remained one game back of Puget Sound and Pacific Lutheran, who are tied for first place in the conference standings.

Fellows netted her conference-leading 10th goal of the season in the 36th minute. A free kick was sent into the box from the right side of the field and several players put a foot on the ball before Fellows was able to control possession and finish from close range.

The Wildcats controlled the majority of the possession, generating 20 shots compared with three for the Pirates. Linfield also held a 13-1 edge in shots on goal. The Wildcats took six corner kicks compared with two by the Pirates.

Andrea Stump recorded a season-high 12 saves for the Pirates, including multiple diving saves against a Linfield offense tied for the conference lead in goals scored this season.

Whitworth continues conference play next weekend on the road against Willamette and Lewis & Clark. The Pirates conclude the regular season by hosting George Fox on Nov. 8 for Senior Day.
