Box Score NEWBERG, Ore. - A goal from George Fox in the opening minutes of the second half broke a scoreless tie and proved to be the difference as the Bruins edged Whitworth, 1-0 on Saturday afternoon.
Whitworth fell to 3-8-1 overall and 2-6-1 in the Northwest Conference while the Bruins (1-7-3, 1-5-1) earned their first win of the 2014 season.
Cassidy Skillings netted her first goal of the year in the 47th minute, scoring off a cross to the middle of the box from Becca Allen.
Whitworth is still yet to allow a first-half goal in the 2014 season, but fell short in its seventh one-goal loss of the season.
The Pirates held the majority of the offensive opportunities with a 9-7 shot advantage, including a 5-2 edge in the first half, and took six corner kicks compared with one for George Fox.
Andrea Stump made four saves for the Pirates while Ally Swanson recorded three saves in the shutout effort for the Bruins.
The Pirates will look to bounce back when they host Whitman on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at the Whitworth Soccer Field.
