Box Score SPOKANE, Wash. – Jackie Day's goal in the 75th minute gave Whitworth a 1-0 win over visiting Lewis & Clark in a Northwest Conference women's soccer match on Sunday.
The Pirates improved to 7-7-5 overall and 4-6-5 in the NWC. The Pioneers dropped to 9-8-1, 6-7-1.
Andrea Stump only had to make two saves to post her eighth shutout of the season. Whitworth outshot L&C 17-8, including a 6-2 edge in shots on-goal. Geena Fong made five saves for the Pioneers.
Whitworth controlled much of the second half and had pressured Fong for several minutes before Day got off a shot that was blocked by the L&C defense. But the ball rebounded right back to Day in the middle of the penalty area and she put the rebound past Fong for her second goal of the season.
The Pirate defense prevented the Pioneers from getting a shot on goal over the final 15 minutes of the match to preserve the victory.
Five Whitworth seniors suited up for the final time at home in a Pirate uniform and were recognized at halftime of the game. The seniors are: Amber Craig, Jami Hegg, Abbie Moseley, Amy Sterk and Kristin Wucherer.
Whitworth will finish the season next Saturday with a match at George Fox University.
